Summer rains have definitely brought out new life to many perennial and container gardens, but with it the pests have come. Watch out for grasshoppers. If your plants have big holes on the edges, it is usually them. They can be controlled biologically with Nolo Bait, but only when they are young. Once you have mature grasshoppers, it is very difficult to control them. Slugs are another problem. If your plants have holes in the middle, not the edges, itis usually slugs or caterpillars. Both can be controlled with diatomaceous earth. Late July is the time to control these pests before the foliage on your perennials starts to look torn and ratty.
